On April 3, FAU Provost Dr. John Pritchett announced the appointment of Dr. Valerie J. Bristor as Dean of the College of Education. The appointment followed an extensive review of the Search Committee’s report and direct input from individuals.
Dr. Bristor had served as interim dean of the College of Education since July 2008. Prior to her appointment as interim dean, Bristor served as senior associate dean of the College of Education.
She earned her Ph.D. at Ball State University in the field of Elementary Education, with cognates in Reading and Research Methodology, her M.Ed. in Elementary Education from the University of South Alabama and her B.A. in Elementary Education from Evangel University.
Bristor was a classroom teacher for nine years in Mobile, Alabama. When she came to FAU in 1988, she taught undergraduate and graduate reading/language arts education courses. After serving as chair of the Department of Teacher Education for seven years, Bristor became associate dean of the College of Education, Davie Campus, in fall 2000, followed by her appointment as senior associate dean in fall 2006.
Her publications, conference presentations and grants have focused on her research interest of reading in the content area and teacher education.
Bristor was a nominee for the President’s Leadership Award in 2006, a finalist for the College of Education Distinguished Teacher Award in 1997, and a recipient of the University Teacher Incentive Program Award in 1994. She has been a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House and American/Canadian Cancer Societies and is currently a member of the board of directors for the Broward Education Foundation.
